I’ve never been afraid of the dark...but that doesn’t mean I wanted to live in it. And maybe everyone wants what they can’t have, but I should’ve thought it over before I accepted the key and unlocked the door to their forbidden world.

Number One is mostly silent. He watches me with them very carefully. His gaze never wanders. His interest never wanes.

Number Two is mostly gentle. But it’s the other side of him I like best. The wild side.

Number Three is mostly reserved. He refuses to cross the line. Even when I beg.

It was carnal, it was sensual, and it was erotic. That’s it. That’s all it was supposed to be. A trip into the dark. A peek into the forbidden.

I just didn’t expect to like them.

*****

I heard the door open and close and said nothing. And the footsteps coming down the hallway towards the bedroom. I even heard him say, “Hey.” So softly. “You awake?” Like he didn’t want to wake me.

I listened as he stepped into the closet. There was that slick sound a man makes when he pulls his tie through his shirt collar. I heard the unclasping of his watch. The jingle of his belt buckle and the shuffle of his pants as they dropped to the floor.

I even heard his moan as he stood over me. I could feel his shadow from the streetlamp outside like it was heat.

Then the bed creaked, the mattress sank. And his warm, hard body straddled me.
Still, I said nothing.

I just buried my face in the sweet scent of the pillow and closed my eyes, feigning sleep.

“Rochelle,” he whispered, leaning over me. His fingertips gently brushed the hair away from my shoulder. His mouth pressed against my skin. “Did you miss me? God, I’ve missed you. Two weeks is too long. We need to renegotiate.”

He nipped my neck. Kissed it. Licked my ear as he positioned himself to begin.

And I said… nothing.

Even though my name is not Rochelle.
That’s why I’m here. Tied up and gagged inside the closet. Sitting in the dark as three men on the other side of the door argue about where Rochelle went, why I was in her bed, and what they should do next.

I should be scared but I’m not.

I should be screaming, but I won’t.

Because this just feels very, very right.

And the only thing on my mind is… what will happen next?

Taking Turns The Turning Series Book 1 edition by JA Huss Romance eBooks

This story begins with Chella...taking her friends place in an arrangement that she thought she understood and knew what to expect but from the very first night, she realizes she was very wrong.

There are rules, each man gets his turn and each turn has its own set of rules but the most important rule is not to get attached and to be happy.

Each person has their reason for being a part of this game but this particular game will change them all forever.

My review:

This book...wow! First let me say this. Fans of JA Huss books know what they are getting going in so if you don't like the dark twisty world only she can create, don't go in. But for the super fans like me...friends, buckle in for this amazing ride!!

Dark, twisty and steamy this book will keep you guessing all the way until the end.

Smith is the bad guy you love to hate and hate to love. Quin the sweet one that is easy to love and Bric loves to be in control. Put these three together, throw in one very willing woman and the pages are burning up from start to finish.

I don't want to give the plot away, it is too good, you have to experience it for yourself but don't worry you won't be disappointed and the epilogue will have you counting the days until book two is released.

My thoughts:

POV: switches between all four characters throughout
Quick hook or slow starter? 5 (I was hooked from the first chapter)
Character development: 5
Level of Romance between characters: 5
Passion/Heat level: 5(very steamy and not for the faint of heart.)
Angst/Heartbreak: 5 (Dark and twisty remember?)
Cliffhanger?: Yes, can't wait to see what happens next.

Overall, this was amazing! I didn't want it to end and cannot wait to see what the author has in store for us next!

Taking Turns The Turning Series Book 1 edition by JA Huss Romance eBooks Reviews

Kudos JA Huss. Great writing. I couldn't put it down . It's not a typical romance story, not only because it's a menage but because of the motivations of the characters.

Each of the four main characters had their own chapters (written in first person pov) that enhanced the seamless telling of the story.

The first chapter was Quin's. It was like the beginning of a television drama. A handsome man walks into a private club . . . as he walks through, major characters are introduced, Smith, a philanthropic quirky billionaire who owns the club but lives off his friends and Bric, the third guy.

Quin was the man who gagged then tied Chelle up and put her in the closet. Then he called the other guys so they could figure out what to do with her. Smith took charge of her and presented her to the group as the next toy. Bric looked forward to spanking her.

Chelle inserted herself into the lives of these three men, who have shared a number of different women over a period of ten years, taking turns with them. These men were wealthy, dirty manwhores who loved to play on the dark side. The thing about Chelle was she wasn't like any of the other women. She didn't need their money. She liked the dark and the dirty sex. She knew their game. She could play it, enjoy it, and it was going to set her free.

To date, it's one of my favorite JA Huss books.

This can be enjoyed as a standalone but the epilogue was a great teaser to the next book. Just call me impatient.
I may be the Lone Ranger here, but I didn't care for this book. I stopped reading it about 48% of the way through then, after a couple of days, decided to push through to the end. I was sorry I did. I can't recall reading a more depressing book about 4 seriously flawed characters. The story revolves around 3 men (Bric, Quin, and Smith) and 1 woman (Chella) who engage in contractual (literally) sex at a club founded by Bric. The author provides no explanation as to why these 3 men, all good looking and extremely wealthy need keep and share a woman at their Club. Maybe I could have gotten into the story more if there was some background given as to why. WHY was a big question always running through my head as I read and I kept reading hoping for insight. Why did they have the need for a contractual sexual relationship with the same woman? Why are they friends and for how long? Why did they engage in group sex which involved them touching each other as well as Chella? On and on it went. There was some closure provided to the Smith/Chella story, but it was deeply disturbed and depressing. I won't be reading any more books in this series.
I was extremely disappointed at the lack of detail in this book. I've read some of Huss' other works, and appreciate that she doesn't write "conventional romances", but this really missed the mark for me. I'm definitely a fan of the author so my opinion may be a little harsh as I went into this with pretty high standards.
If you've read the description and/ or other reviews, you are familiar with the plot so I won't get into all of that. I will say, however, that the dialogue and events are extremely redundant with very little detail. For me, it was an extremely slow read as the un-shaped thought processes of the characters and premise of the game Taking Turns were outlined over and over; continuously stating the same things throughout the book...400+ pages of a vaguely-detailed broken record of redundant filler.
The whole book felt tedious and the sex scenes were basically short summaries and extremely contrived. The only emotion or connection to the story I felt was only within the last couple of chapters. In the end, you glean a few more details about the characters and what they hoped to achieve, but not nearly enough information was ever given to get to know any of them or to be immersed in the story itself and it never really went anywhere.
This story begins with Chella...taking her friends place in an arrangement that she thought she understood and knew what to expect but from the very first night, she realizes she was very wrong.
